What Is Turf Infill and Why Does It Matter?

Infill is the granular material spread between artificial grass fibers after installation. It serves several critical functions: it weighs the turf down and prevents shifting, supports the fibers so they stand upright, provides cushioning underfoot, assists with drainage, and helps regulate surface temperature. Without proper infill, turf fibers lay flat, the surface feels hard, and the product will not last as long.

Silica Sand: The Standard Choice

Silica sand is the most common and affordable infill option. It is heavy enough to keep turf in place, provides good drainage, and does not break down over time. We carry two grades: SGS Brand Silica Sand (tan/natural color) and Premium White Silica Sand. Application rate is typically 1-2 lbs per square foot. Silica sand works well for residential lawns, commercial installations, and any application where pet odor is not a primary concern.

Zeofill: The Pet Odor Solution

Zeofill is a natural zeolite mineral that absorbs and neutralizes ammonia from pet urine. It is the number one recommended infill for homes with dogs. Zeofill absorbs moisture and odor molecules at the molecular level, releasing them slowly during rain or rinsing. Envirofill: Premium Antimicrobial Infill

Envirofill is a coated sand infill with built-in Microban antimicrobial protection. It inhibits bacterial growth, controls odor, and stays cooler than standard sand infill. Envirofill is an excellent choice for pet areas, playgrounds, and high-traffic residential installations. It costs more than standard silica sand but provides long-lasting antimicrobial performance without reapplication. Available in our 16/30 mesh size in 50lb bags.

Crumb Rubber: For Athletic and Play Applications

Crumb rubber (recycled tire rubber) provides maximum shock absorption and is commonly used in athletic fields, playgrounds, and high-impact areas. It is the softest infill option and meets fall-height safety standards when applied at proper depth. However, crumb rubber retains more heat than mineral infills and has faced scrutiny over potential chemical content. Copper Slag: Heavy-Duty Ballast

Copper slag is an extremely heavy, angular infill used when maximum weight and stability are needed. It is common in commercial applications, high-wind areas, and large-scale installations where preventing turf movement is critical. How to Choose the Right Infill

For residential lawns without pets: silica sand is cost-effective and performs well. For homes with dogs: Zeofill or Envirofill are strongly recommended for odor control. For putting greens: fine silica sand at a precise application rate provides the right ball roll speed. For playgrounds: crumb rubber meets safety standards. For commercial high-traffic: Envirofill or silica sand depending on budget. For windy locations: heavier infill (copper slag or dense silica) prevents shifting.

Application Tips

Always apply infill on a dry day -- wet infill clumps and distributes unevenly. Use a drop spreader for even coverage and make multiple passes in different directions. After spreading, use a power broom or stiff push broom to work the infill down into the turf fibers. Check infill levels annually and top up as needed. Never over-fill -- the infill level should sit at about three-quarters of the fiber height, leaving blade tips visible above the infill.
