Pile height, blade shape, backing type, and face weight -- what matters and what does not.
Pile Height
Pile height is the length of the grass blades. Shorter pile (0.5-1 inch) is best for putting greens and athletic fields. Medium pile (1.5-1.75 inches) works for most residential and pet applications. Taller pile (2+ inches) suits playgrounds and luxury residential where a lush look is priority.
Face Weight
Face weight measures fiber density in ounces per square yard. Higher face weight = denser turf. Residential: 50-70 oz is standard. Commercial: 70-80+ oz for heavy traffic. Our Commercial Max at 80 oz is the densest product we offer.
Blade Shape
W-shaped blades are the most resilient and spring back after foot traffic. C-shaped blades offer a softer feel. Flat blades are used in budget products but mat down faster. All SGS products use W or C-shaped blades.
Backing Type
Standard polyurethane backing works for most applications. Perforated backing (with pre-punched drainage holes) is essential for pet areas -- it drains 3x faster. Woven backing is used in commercial and athletic products for maximum durability.
Color and Realism
Multi-tone color (3-4 shades of green plus brown thatch) creates the most realistic appearance. Our Nature's Supreme features four-tone coloring with natural brown thatch fibers. Single-tone green turf looks artificial and is typically a lower-grade product.
Our Recommendation
For most residential projects, Nature's Supreme ($3.49/sq ft) offers the best balance of realism, durability, and value. For pet areas, upgrade to Supreme Pet ($3.79/sq ft) for antimicrobial protection and faster drainage.
