How Artificial Grass Is Installed: Step-by-Step

SGS Editorial Team|6 min read|March 2025

A detailed walkthrough of the professional installation process.

Step 1: Site Assessment

Every installation begins with a site assessment. The area is measured, drainage conditions assessed, underground utilities identified, and product options discussed. This is when your installer provides a detailed estimate.

Step 2: Demolition and Excavation

Existing grass, soil, and organic material are removed to a depth of 3-4 inches. Proper excavation prevents settling and ensures a level, stable base. Waste is hauled away.

Step 3: Base Preparation

A layer of crushed aggregate (typically class II road base or decomposed granite) is spread, graded for drainage, and compacted with a plate compactor. This creates the foundation for your turf.

Step 4: Weed Barrier

A commercial-grade weed barrier fabric is laid over the compacted base to prevent any growth from pushing through the turf.

Step 5: Turf Installation

Turf rolls are cut to fit, laid out, and seamed together using specialized adhesive and seaming tape. Edges are secured with landscape spikes or bender board. All seams are invisible when done correctly.

Step 6: Infill and Brushing

Silica sand or specialty infill (ZeoFill for pet areas) is spread across the turf and power-brushed in. Infill weighs down the turf, supports blade stand-up, and provides cushion. A final power-brush gives the turf its natural, finished look.
